Virus Threat: My Doom

By Michelle Collins |

A new worm virus is making its way through the Internet at a rapid pace. This worm comes through email with an attachment, which copies and sends itself to other addresses found in the contact list. Additionally, the virus provides backdoor access to hackers who can then use the compromised computer to download and run files at will.

While the virus may arrive from a known address, you can identify the attachment by one of its extensions:

  • .pif
  • .scr
  • .exe
  • .cmd
  • .bat
  • .zip

My Doom can also be spotted through its subject lines and messages which could be a combination of these:

Subject

  • Test
  • Hi
  • Hello
  • Mail Delivery System
  • Mail Transaction Failed
  • Server Report
  • Status
  • Error

Message

  • Mail transaction failed. Partial message is available.
  • The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary attachment.
  • The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment.

If you receive such an email, make sure that it is deleted without opening the attachment and update your virus definitions.

For more detailed instructions for removal visit Symantec Security Response at: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/w32.novarg.a@mm.html.
