New survey shows spam is on the rise
"At best, spam is annoying; at worst, it's objectionable and a real threat to productivity and resources," said Steve Cullen, senior vice president, Consumer and Client Product Delivery at Symantec. "As consumers face a steady increase in spam e-mails every day, it is clear that unsolicited e-mail is a problem that must be addressed if users are to continue to enjoy the benefits of online computing."
Highlights of the survey included
- 37 per cent received over 100 spam e-mails each week
- 84 per cent felt that this unsolicited mail takes up too much of their time
- 18 per cent said spam takes up too much space on the computer and that it can be difficult to delete or unsubscribe from
- 65 per cent of respondents spent more than 10 minutes a day looking at spam
The survey also showed that people are sensitive about what they’ll find when they open these unsolicited emails. Pornography was the biggest concern, with 38 per cent. The majority of parents (77 per cent) worried about what kind of spam their children were getting.
