Can an employer extend work hours without notice?
Expert: Howard Levitt
Jack asked:
In Ontario, does an employer have to give advance notice of a temporary change in start or quitting times? For example, can the employer say "it is required that you stay two hours late today."
Howard Levitt answered:
Generally not unless there is a collective agreement limiting that. If employers abuse that, they are at risk of losing their employees. However, if there is no notice and the employee has other plans or childcare duty, the employer has no recourse if they refuse.
