BC: What is the formula used to back out HST?

Fran asked:
British Columbia: What is the formula used to back out the HST when the total of a receipt includes it and does not show it seperately?
CO Staff answered:
Because the HST is 12 per cent in British Columbia, the formula would look like this:
Price x 12 (HST percentage) / 112= HST.
So for example, if the reciept which includes the HST in the price totals $168.00, the formula would be:
$168.00 x 12 / 112. = $18.00
The original price before HST would be $150.00, and the HST would be $18.00, totalling $168.00.
