How do you invoice for work done on a job, minus rental of equipment?

By Hank Bulmash |

Katherine asked:

We are doing a job for someone who is renting us some equipment to help in the particular job. How do we properly invoice for the work done minus the rental of the equipment?

Hank Bulmash answered:

Really there are two transactions occurring here. The first is the provision of a service provided by the letter writer. The second is the renting of equipment to the letter writer.

The service provider should provide an invoice charging for the job. The renter should provide another invoice for the rental of equipment.
