Employee Notice Requirements in B.C.

Expert: Gary Wheeler

Hakan asked:

How much notice is an employee (in B.C.) legally required to give if he/she decides to quit a job?

Gary Wheeler answered:

The short answer is none. Most employers appreciate this consideration from an employee, but it is not required.

Editor`s note: the Canadian Bar Association points out that your employment contract, whether written or oral, may require you to give notice. It is considered a courtesy to give your employer notice and most new employers will understand that you need to give notice to your current employer. It is not uncommon for the current employer to ask someone who has resigned to leave immediately and pay out the wages you would have earned during the notice period.
